Nail Manicure

There are a few different ways you can choose to do your basic manicure.  It is very important to have a solid basic manicure technique.  Once you develop one you can add to it and customize it to offer a variety of services on your salon menu.

To start you need to make sure your clients nails are free and clear of all polish.  After the polish is removed ask your client if they have any preferences for their manicure.  If you can work what they like or don’t like in to their appointment they will appreciate it.  Clients hate when you don’t pay attention to what they are asking and just do what you want.

Next, file the nails so they are about the same length.  This will help the nails grow out evenly.  If I’m doing a male manicure and the nails are long I will clip them first and then file since I usually want them as short as possible.  On a woman’s manicure I always file the nail.  Using a clipper can make nails that are already fragile split.  The nail does not bend when you use a clipper and that will stress the nail that is left and cause it to split or break.

I always use a nail file that is in the style of the emery board, I don’t like metal or crystal.  I prefer straight boards not banana shape, but that is totally up to you.  I also like to use 100/180 grit files.  I have found that these files work the best in most situations.  Carefully file the nails to the desired shape.  A slightly squared off style or a mix of oval and square sometimes referred to as squoval are the better shapes.  Nails typically grow better and faster in these shapes so stay away from rounding the nails if possible.  This shape tends to have more problems, but you can use your judgement and clients preference to guide you.
