Nail care - natural nails part 2
| June 12, 2010 |If you want to grow long healthy nails there are a few things you can do or avoid to help you. First of all never use your nails as tools. It sounds easy, but pat attention and you’ll find that you use your nails for a lot of things that you don’t even realize you are doing.
Try to use the tips of your fingers, or other parts of your hand, heck even a pen or a pencil will do the trick. During the course of the day you probably pick, grab, poke, scrape and bang your nails repeatedly. Don’t open soda cans or soup cans that have pull tabs with your nails either. Take care when doing even simple things like flipping open your phone or dialing it. You may not think you are doing damage and you may not see any, but you are weakening the nail.
Cleaning and gardening can also be very damaging to the nails, so whenever possible wear gloves. Detergents and chemicals are very hard on your nails. They can cause peeling, splitting and weakening, which in turn will cause your nails to break. Even if you use organic and natural products you can still cause damage. Digging around in the garden isn’t recommended for natural nail growth either. Wearing gloves will protect your nails from infection and help keep them from drying out & losing natural oils. Gloves, especially the thicker ones, can even be a buffer between you and a broken nail so wear them whenever you can.
Another important thing to do is to keep your nails moisturised. Nails need moisture just like the rest of your skin so whenever you rub lotion into your hands make sure you massage it into your cuticles as well. Cuticle oil is another great resource for moisturizing your nails. They have lots of different kinds and have many inexpensive ones that work fabulous. I even have clients that just use olive oil. They swear by it and from what I see when I am taking care of their nails does the job.
