Acrylic nails - application

| July 4, 2010 |

I have found that I have quite a bit to say on the topic of applying acrylic.  This series is going to be a lot longer then I had anticipated.  Probably 5 or 6 posts!  I hope you’ll stick with me, as there will be tons of good information that will be worth reading about.  Now let’s start learning to apply.

Now that you have all your supplies ready it’s time to start on your technique.  First make sure the nail bed is ready for the product to be applied.  We will start with a nail that is receiving acrylic for the first time and move on to fills later.

Again, I do recommend using a good brand of acrylic and incorporating the whole line (bonding agent, liquid monomer & acrylic powder).  I really think you will have better results and there are many other ways to save if money is an issue.

Improperly preparing the nail bed before you apply your product is the main cause of lifting.  My clients usually wash their hands before I start working on them (I wash mine too) and then sit at my very clean station.  If I am applying any type of enhancements I won’t put on any cream or do water soaks.  I gently push back the cuticle that surrounds the nail plate.  Cut as little as you can, I always try to remove the dead layer of tissue just with the pusher.

Many times lifting is caused by not removing the cuticle properly.  What happens is that the cuticle that is left on the nail gets caught between the product and the natural nail.  This prevents the product and nail bed from bonding, which in turn results in lifting.

After the cuticle has been properly pushed back and removed lightly buff the surface of the natural nail, don’t use anything courser then 180 grit.  I can’t stress lightly enough, as you can easily damage the nail plate.  I don’t like to buff or file the natural nail ever, but it really will help your enhancements stay better.

A good way to ensure your acrylic nails stay strong is to apply a coat of Rejuvacote. This will add weeks of life to your acrylic nails and make them look even better than they otherwise would have.
